Head's Introduction

Blackheath Prep School is a happy and thriving co-educational prep school for children aged 3 to 11. Located in an idyllic setting on the edge of the heath close to Blackheath Village, the five-acre site offers superb specialist facilities, large playgrounds, forest school areas and extensive playing fields.

At Blackheath Prep we are committed to achieving academic excellence within an ethos of strong pastoral care and supported by a rich and varied extra-curricular programme. We are ambitious for your children and who they can become. We encourage each child to grasp every opportunity available to them so they can achieve their personal bests and leave us, aged 11, well prepared for the next stage of their education.

We believe strongly that children thrive when they are happy and nurtured and so it is no surprise that visitors comment on our warm atmosphere and friendly culture. The size of the school enables us to treat each child as an individual and we are proud of the fact that teachers know every child by name. It demonstrates that we are a community and that we value everyone’s contribution.

Our teachers work hard both in and outside the classroom, to ensure that life for the children within our care is stimulating and exciting. We seek to ignite their natural curiosity for the world and to develop their skills and character. We aim to create a purposeful environment in which children can grow up to regard learning as engaging and fun and we set them on the path to becoming life-long learners.

At Blackheath Prep, we are committed to a holistic education and place great emphasis on a child’s cultural and social development. At the heart of our school are the Four Pillars: Trust, Respect, Responsibility and Consideration. We want all our children to be kind, thoughtful and courteous so they leave us with an awareness of right and wrong and a respect for others.

In Year 6, children are well prepared for the 11+ examinations and we work in partnership with parents to ensure the right school is selected for each child. Results of the Year Six leavers at Blackheath Prep are exceptional. Regularly, more than half the year group is awarded academic scholarships at leading independent schools such as Alleyn’s, Colfe's, Dulwich College, Eltham College, James Allen’s Girls’ School and Sevenoaks School. A significant number also secure places at top grammar schools such as Newstead Wood and St Olave’s.

It is a great privilege and responsibility to be involved in educating and shaping the lives of young people. At Blackheath Prep we take our role very seriously. If you are considering the school, I hope this website will give you a flavour of our ethos and what we stand for.

Regular open mornings are held throughout the term and you are encouraged to visit and experience our warm welcome at first hand. Thank you for your interest and I look forward to meeting you in the future.
