Trips and Visits
At Blackheath Prep we enjoy an enviable location adjacent to the open spaces of Blackheath and Greenwich Park and have access to the Kent countryside. The outstanding academic and cultural institutions of London are also within easy travelling distance.
Children learn about the area on local walks. We have an extensive programme of trips to museums, galleries, lectures and theatres in London. These enhance learning in History, Art and Science in particular.
From Nursery onwards, day trips to local environmental centres allow children to experience learning outside the classroom. As well as offering opportunities for enrichment of the curriculum in Science and Geography, these experiences also provide stimulus for creativity in Writing, Art and Design.
Outdoor Adventurous Activities are developed through our residential visits programme. The emphasis is on developing self-confidence through physical activity as well as encouraging teamwork. Pupils are exposed to situations in which they need to make decisions about risk-taking and personal safety albeit in a controlled environment. In Year 4, children visit an outdoor centre in Sussex experiencing challenges ranging from high ropes courses to night time navigation exercises. In Year 5, they take part in watersports activities on the Isle of Wight, experiencing sailing, windsurfing and kayaking. In Year 6, pupils experience climbing and abseiling as well as undertaking a series of outdoor problem-solving and team-building tasks during their visit to France. The children experience the French language first-hand through visits to local businesses and a treasure trail through the village.
Visits to school are arranged for local theatre groups and expert speakers. We have enjoyed hearing from a GB athlete, an astronomer, a scientist and a number of authors and illustrators. Visiting parents representing a number of professions have shared their expertise and others have brought to life the customs and practices of a wide range of cultures and religions.
