Blackheath Prep encourages healthy eating and the school adheres to the ‘Healthy Eating Guidelines’ promoted by the government food-based standards. In Science lessons children learn about the major food groups and the importance of a balanced diet. In PSHE lessons, healthy eating is discussed in the context of looking after yourself.
Children are encouraged to bring fruit and fresh juice as break-time snacks and are discouraged from bringing confectionery, crisps and fizzy drinks.
The school is a nut-free environment and children are not allowed to bring products containing nuts in to school.
The majority of children have a cooked lunch at school which is prepared by our in-house catering team. However, children are also welcome to bring a packed lunch from home.
Our menu changes daily and lunches are prepared using as many fresh, locally sourced ingredients as possible. From the Nursery up to Year 1, children are offered a choice of either a vegetarian or non-vegetarian option which is served to them at the table and they can help themselves to salad on the tables. From Year 2 upwards, children are served at the counter where they can choose from at least two vegetarian and two non-vegetarian options. A wide variety of salads is also available from the salad bar.
As well as catering for vegetarians, almost all specific dietary requirements can be accommodated.
