Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum


Nursery and Reception children receive a wide ranging and balanced curriculum. We follow the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum, with a strong emphasis on developing children's literacy and numeracy skills. The EYFS curriculum is divided into two main areas of learning and development which are all interconnected. The ‘Prime Areas’ are fundamental and work together to support the children’s successful learning within the ‘Specific Areas’ which provide essential knowledge for children to be able to participate successfully in society. 

Discovery, interaction, enjoyment and fun form the basis of the teaching and learning and cross-curricular links are embraced. French, Music, Dance, PE, Drama and Forest School are taught by specialist teachers. We aim to give the children a sound foundation of knowledge and understanding, recognising that learning is an integrated process. We set realistic yet challenging expectations that meet the needs of all our children, including children with special educational needs, children who are more able, children with disabilities, children from varying social and cultural backgrounds, children of different ethnic groups and those from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

The outdoor environment is an extension of our continuous provision and a variety of resources and activities are available to facilitate learning. When attending Forest School, children may explore one of three sites. There is a natural wooded area at the end of the school field, a growing area and a more structured natural area with access to a pond.  We aim for the children to attend Forest School whatever the weather. An early years playground is accessed by both Nursery and Reception children each day. The Reception classes also make use of an outside learning garden.
