Year 5 Climate Change Workshop
On Wednesday 6th June as part of Cross Curricular Week Year 5 visited London Zoo.
Focusing on Antarctica, the children took great delight in observing the penguins. One of the children was transformed into a penguin, which the others found highly amusing. Year 5 discovered that penguins have spiked tongues and that their black backs and white fronts camouflage them from prey.
One of the most interesting, yet concerning aspects to the trip was a workshop on climate change. Year 5 learnt about the effect plastic has on our oceans and seas that a staggering 15,000 plastic bottles are used every minute in the UK, and observe a sculpture which gave a visual representation of this huge number.
The children learnt the importance of the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. They considered which of these was the most important in limiting plastic contribution to global warming - bearing in mind it takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to biodegrade.
