Nursery-Developing An Awareness of Safety in Forest School

Building on their experience of using tools, the Nursery children used a hammer to make a sign for our bug hotel.

It’s still a work in progress and we will continue to work on our sign during the last few weeks at forest school, as many of the children have asked to have another turn with the hammer. We also talked about risks in the outdoor environment and what sorts of things we should look out for. The children used little red flags (made by the Reception children), to point out potential risks and any new growth around the woodland. They flagged up various items such as stinging nettles, holly, animal dens and new flowers.


With all the new growth around us, we decided to make nature cards, sticking various colourful finds from around the woodland onto card to take home. We also made ivy crowns for the royal wedding, learning to twist the ivy, tie knots in ribbons and twist pipe cleaners around to decorate them. A great activity to refine our fine motor skills.

The Nursery children were excited to get to use the loppers again, cutting beads for themselves from an Elder branch. After our safety talk and demonstration each child cut their bead, hollowed out the soft centre, decorated the bead and threaded some ribbon through to tie around their wrist. We learnt a bit about some of the trees in our Rainbow Leaf Woodland and how to identify them using our Tree Identity sheets.

When pond dipping, both Reception and Nursery found some exciting pond minibeasts including tadpoles, bloodworms, pond snails, newts and more, learning some interesting facts about them all. Not to mention safety around water!


The children have made streams, been pirates, learnt about weight (floating and sinking), caught minibeasts, done sandpapering, den building, mud painting, mud pies, made rope traps for the teachers and rope fun fairs for the woodland creatures and much more. They are continuing to enjoy their time in our natural spaces and learn through play and experiences.
