Science

Through our teaching of Science we hope to harness the children’s natural curiosity of the world around them, giving them opportunities to explore their surroundings and to understand what they see.  We encourage them to ask questions, providing them with the resources and opportunities to satisfy their enquiries.  Children are taught to plan and carry out investigations, consider the evidence they collect and evaluate their work either independently or collaboratively.  They are encouraged to communicate their findings, using appropriate scientific vocabulary.

We aim to enable the children to apply their scientific knowledge and understanding to solve problems in everyday life and to make sense of the natural and man-made world.  Children are also taught to recognise hazards and risks.

Our teaching programme follows the National Curriculum through a topic approach within the broad areas of Life Processes & Living Things, Materials & their Properties and Physical Processes.  Scientific Enquiry skills are taught through these themes with a strong emphasis on experimental and investigative work.  As the children move through the school extension work meets their needs and ensures that they are prepared for Secondary School Entrance exams.

Younger children are taught Science by their form teachers whilst older children in the Prep School are taught by our Science specialist.  We are very fortunate in being able to use a fully equipped Science laboratory and adjacent pond and wildlife area to enhance delivery of the curriculum.  In addition, use is made of local environmental education centres, visiting theatre groups and the Science and Natural History Museums in London.
