French

The study of French language, life and traditions arouses children’s curiosity about other cultures and raises awareness of the multi-cultural and multi-linguistic world in which they live.  Foreign languages can introduce children to a world of sounds and new discoveries, which provide enjoyment and enrichment.  Research shows that these early positive experiences lay the foundations for a more responsive learning of languages in the later stages of education.

We aim to provide children with the opportunity to develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.  For younger children, speaking and listening will be the main focus of the lessons as they are encouraged to communicate and have fun with language.  Older children learn to read and write using simple grammatical constructions.  They are encouraged to use French for a real purpose.

First hand experience of France and the French language is obtained on a week long residential trip to Northern France for Year 6. The children will receive some intensive language teaching which they will have the opportunity to put into practice through supervised activities such as shopping and cooking as well as outdoor activities.
