About Our School

Blackheath Nursery & Preparatory School is a co-educational school for children aged between 3 and 11. The school is located in an attractive area close to Blackheath village, overlooking the heath itself and the borders of Greenwich Park. The five acre site includes attractive playing fields, tennis courts, a cricket wicket, cricket nets and two playgrounds.

The vision of the school is to make Blackheath Nursery and Preparatory School, not just a good or a very good school but a real beacon of excellence. This means providing an exceptionally good quality of education for every one of the pupils at Blackheath. We aim to achieve high academic standards through stimulating teaching, challenging expectations and first-class resources. We wish the children to be happy, thoughtful, confident and responsible. The ethos of the school is purposeful and supportive. The moral values of courtesy, consideration and care should be the norm. Our aim is to provide an environment in which pupils can flourish, confident in the adults caring for them.

A rigorous refurbishment and building programme has resulted in a most attractive learning environment. In addition to the large form rooms there are specialist teaching rooms for Science, ICT, Art, DT, French, Maths and Music. A multi-purpose hall opened in 2006 and a modern and enlarged dining hall and music suite opened in 2007. These new buildings have further increased opportunities for music, drama, sport and leisure activities.

Most children join the school in the Nursery at the age of three and progress through the Pre-Prep (4-7) and Prep (7-11) before leaving to transfer to selective senior schools. Academic standards are high and pupils are well prepared for selection at 11 and achieve consistent success in obtaining places at both grammar and independent senior schools.

The form teacher of every class is responsible for the pastoral welfare of each child. In the Nursery and the Pre-Preps the form teacher and the key workers and teaching assistants are primarily responsible for teaching the children. However, there is a strong emphasis on specialist teaching from the very beginning. Music, French, PE and Dance are introduced in the Nursery. As the children progress through the school, more specialist teachers are responsible for Art, ICT, Drama, Design Technology, Maths, English and Science.

The quality of teaching has been recognised as one of the many strengths of the school. Pupils display pleasure in their learning and benefit from good relations with both staff and each other.

The school positively encourages parental involvement in the daily life of the school. The strong ethos and vision of the school is underpinned by the considerable enthusiasm of all involved and by the very strong sense of community.

PTFA

Parents, Teachers and Friends Association

The PTFA organise several fun-packed social events throughout the year. These provide opportunities to meet other parents and staff more informally and to make new friends.

The role of the PTFA is to organise social events and raise funds for the school. All parents at the school are invited to become members of the association.  In addition to fundraising, they also offer other services to parents such as ‘Breakfast Club’.
